Legitimate Sites Being Blocked

Important websites are being blocked incorrectly (false positives). Learn how to whitelist sites and adjust filtering.

⏱️ Time Required: 5-15 minutes 🔧 Difficulty: Beginner

Common False Positives

These legitimate sites are frequently blocked by overly aggressive filtering:

False positives occur because filtering uses category-based blocking. A site might be classified in a blocked category even if it has legitimate uses.

Solutions by Filtering Method

1 OpenDNS Filtering

Option A: Whitelist Individual Sites

  1. Log into your OpenDNS account at dashboard.opendns.com
  2. Select your network configuration
  3. Navigate to Web Content Filtering
  4. Scroll to bottom: "Manage Individual Domains"
  5. Under "Always Allow", add the domain
  6. Example: Add reddit.com if needed for schoolwork
  7. Click "Add Domain"
  8. Wait 3-5 minutes for changes to propagate

Option B: Adjust Category Sensitivity

  1. Dashboard → Web Content Filtering
  2. Review blocked categories
  3. Uncheck categories that are blocking too broadly
  4. Example: If educational sites are blocked, uncheck "Forums/Bulletin Boards"
  5. Save changes
Note: OpenDNS FamilyShield (free version) cannot be customized. Upgrade to OpenDNS Home (free with signup) for whitelist control.

Temporary Access Solutions

When permanent whitelisting isn't appropriate but temporary access is needed:

Timed Whitelist (Preferred)

Some systems support temporary exceptions:

  • Net Nanny: "Allow for 1 hour" button when site is blocked
  • Bark: Can approve individual site access requests
  • Qustodio: "Pause Protection" for 5-60 minutes

After time expires, filtering automatically resumes.

Supervised Browsing

Unblock temporarily while supervising:

  1. Disable filtering temporarily
  2. Sit with child while they access needed content
  3. Re-enable filtering when done

Appropriate for school projects requiring research on sensitive topics.

Alternative Device

Use an unfiltered device for specific tasks:

  • Parent's phone or laptop (supervised)
  • School chromebook (school's filtering only)
  • Public library computer

Maintains filtering on child's personal devices.

Request System

Teach kids to request access:

  1. Child encounters blocked site
  2. Takes screenshot or notes URL
  3. Asks parent to review
  4. Parent decides whether to whitelist

Builds communication and trust while maintaining protection.

Decision Framework: To Unblock or Not?

✅ Unblock If:

⚠️ Proceed Cautiously If:

Consider: Supervised access only, not permanent whitelist

❌ Don't Unblock If:

Common Scenarios

Reddit blocked but needed for homework

Problem: Teacher assigned research on specific subreddit, but Reddit is blocked.

Solutions:

  1. Best: Supervised access on parent's device
  2. Alternative: Whitelist specific subreddit only (if filtering supports subdomain/path filtering)
  3. Option 3: Contact teacher about alternative assignment
Bank website blocked

Problem: Online banking site flagged as financial/commerce.

Solution: Always whitelist legitimate financial institutions:

  1. Verify URL is correct (beware of phishing)
  2. Add to permanent whitelist
  3. Add both www and non-www versions
  4. Consider whitelisting entire financial category if using DNS filtering
Online shopping sites blocked

Problem: Clothing/shoe retailers blocked due to model photos.

Assessment needed:

  • Major retailers (Target, Old Navy, etc.): Usually safe to whitelist
  • Fashion sites with revealing images: Supervise first
  • Victoria's Secret, lingerie sites: Age-dependent decision

Consider: Is online shopping necessary, or can child shop in-store?

Educational sites about health/anatomy

Problem: Age-appropriate health education sites blocked.

Legitimate sites to consider whitelisting:

  • KidsHealth.org
  • TeensHealth.org
  • Planned Parenthood educational resources (age-dependent)
  • Mayo Clinic, WebMD
  • Approved school health curriculum sites

Better to provide accurate health information than force kids to unsafe sources.

YouTube blocked but need specific educational video

Problem: YouTube entirely blocked, but teacher assigned a specific video.

Solutions:

  1. Best: Use YouTube Kids or Restricted Mode with supervised access
  2. Alternative: Parent downloads video, watches together
  3. Last resort: Temporarily disable filtering, watch video, re-enable
